Two Years in a Tree

We're starting to read a new story this week. It's a true story about Julia Hill, who lived up in a redwood tree in Humboldt County for two years. During your computer lab time today, we're going to learn how to search for more information about the story and practice commenting on what you find. While you're searching for information, try to find the answers to these questions.

Where was Julia Hill born?

What's her middle name?

Who is Luna?

What did Julia do after she saved the tree?

Hill agreed to vacate the tree. In addition, $50,000 that Hill and other activists raised during the cause was given to the logging company (a somewhat controversial action amongst fellow activists), as stipulated by the resolution. The $50,000 Earth First! paid to Pacific Lumber was then donated to a local university to do research about sustainable forestry

On December 10, 1997, Julia Hill ascended an ancient giant redwood tree in Humboldt County, CA to protest and draw attention to the mismanagement of old-growth timberland. On December 15, 1999, she entered into agreement with PALCO (Pacific Lumber Company) that the redwood (variously known as "the Stafford Giant", to locals, and "Luna", to Julia and her Earth First! supporters) and the ecosystem in which it grows (about 3 acres), shall be protected and preserved in perpetuity.
Julia spent most of those two years perched at least 180 feet above the forest floor, enduring harrassment from Pacific Lumber employees, surviving El Nino storms, giving interviews and contributing to the Earth First! cause.

Hill is best known for living in a 180-foot-tall, 600-year-old California Redwood tree for 738 days between December 10, 1997 to December 18, 1999. Hill lived barefoot in the tree, affectionately known as "Luna," to prevent loggers of the Pacific Lumber Company from cutting it down.

A native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Hill suffered a mild brain injury in a car crash a year before her tree-sitting experience[1]. She embarked on a spiritual quest afterwards, rejected the faith of her childhood and came away believing that we could transform ourselves; this eventually led her to the environmental cause opposed to the destruction of the redwood forests in Humboldt County, California

The giant Humboldt County tree was protected under an agreement reached with Pacific Lumber Co. last year when Hill ended her protest. The company agreed to preserve Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone in exchange for a $50,000 payment from Hill and her legion of supporters

Julia states that she would never cut down a tree for paper as it is a stupid waste of a natural resource. She also states that Luna poured sap during her tree-sitting and that she realized that this was the tree conveying its grief during the felling of other trees. Also related, in the popular TV show

hey guys i found this information i think is very interesting...
Luna is the American name given to a redwood tree in October 1997. Another name the tree has been referred to is the 'Stafford Giant.' The tree is between 600 and 1000 years old and lives in a grove of old growth forest in Headwaters Forest in Humboldt County, California near the small community of Stafford, California.

As of spring 2007, the tree is doing well with new growth each year. Caretakers routinely climb the tree to check on its condition and to maintain the steel guywires.[2]

Magdalena said...

Her nick name was Butterfly! Not Luna

Martha Elena said...

Hill climbed Luna in 1997 as a protest to the logging of ancient redwood trees by Pacific Lumber, a timber company owned by Texas financier Charles Hurwitz. She stayed in the tree for two years, drawing international media attention from her treetop perch.

Friend of the Earth" features a female character who spends three years 180 feet up in a tree named "Artemis", an obvious reference to Julia and Luna.

From her tree-sit, Julia Butterfly has won the Leonard Peltier Protector of the Woods Award and the Garberville Veterans for Peace Medal of Valor, from which the cover art was taken. A gathering of support for her took place on March 20, her 100th day in Luna and the first day of Spring, at the Stafford mudslide, two miles from the main Maxxam/Pacific Lumber mill, 240 miles north of San Francisco.
